Glossary: Single Source of Truth

What does Single Source of Truth (SSOT) mean?

Single Source of Truth (SSOT) describes the optimal state of a company with regard to its handling of data. Decisions in companies are often made with inadequate data, which can usually be traced back to the fact that the data used cannot be found, there are different records on the same topic and so on. The Single Source of Truth now addresses this problem. If a company reaches this state, the…

  • …data that is the same or similar summarized.
  • …all information is stored in a database to which all relevant persons have access.
  • …decisions are made on the basis of the same data.

Possible challenges during implementation

Implementing a single source of truth is often not quite as easy as it seems at first glance. There are several challenges that need to be overcome. Firstly, a wide variety of data sources must be identified and summarized. On average, these data sources consist of over 400 sources of information. Secondly, the quality of the individual data must be ensured, as an individual data source is only trustworthy if it is correct and qualitative data. Data security should also not be forgotten, as confidential and sensitive data is often involved.

Implementation can entail risks, but implementation is all the more worthwhile in retrospect. Testify can help with the implementation.

Advantages of a single source of truth

Implementing a single source of truth can be challenging, but it also brings many benefits.

  • Breaking down data silos: By using a single data source, so-called data silos can be avoided and different departments have access to the same, reliable and accurate data.
  • Prevent incorrect data: By working with just one data source, errors in the preparation of data in different teams are prevented and informed decisions can be made.
  • Trustworthy and precise data: Thanks to the single source of truth, the most up-to-date data is always available and a simple and uncomplicated comparison of a wide variety of data can take place.
  • Transparency: Authorized persons have access to the same data and can therefore get the same picture of a situation based on identical, trustworthy data.

At a glance, these advantages mean

  • Data quality is improved
  • Real-time data access
  • Help with decisions
  • Processes remain constant
  • Acceleration for employees: internal onboarding
  • Help with identifying bottlenecks
  • Unification of team goals

These benefits can be decisive for the success of a company, which is why attention should be paid to the single source of truth and an implementation should be merged.
