Since 1969, Weinbergmaier GmbH, based in the Steyr-Land district, has been known for a wide variety of frozen specialties of the highest quality. The brands BAUERNLAND, TONI KAISER, ACKERL and HÄNSEL & GRETEL stand for typical Austrian dishes such as traditional pastries, dumplings and potato specialties. The company has been part of the VIVATIS Group since 2007, making it one of the largest food groups in the country. In the 2023 financial year, the Wolfern and Vienna sites generated a turnover of 72.1 million euros with a total of around 250 employees.
Challenges before the introduction of a digital solution
In the production of Weinbergmaier GmbH in Wolfern, the classic documentation with pen and paper posed a number of challenges. A digital solution was therefore sought to make the production process more efficient and traceable.
Due to the handwritten documentation processes, Weinbergmaier faced a number of challenges:
- One of the biggest problems was the inefficient and time-consuming manual management of paper documents. The entire organization of the checklists, from handing them out on the production lines to collecting and evaluating them, was complicated and cumbersome.
- In addition, there were hardly any options for digital evaluations, which made it difficult to quickly find specific information, such as the value of a specific core temperature measurement or certain documents for audits.
- An additional challenge: Weinbergmaier has grown considerably in the last three years. The company has almost tripled in size and capacity. As a result, the volume of documents to be managed has increased considerably, becoming almost unmanageable and difficult to keep track of. The focus was therefore on creating a standardized design for the records as well as the seamless provision of the latest versions of documents.
As a result, Weinbergmaier decided to find a new, more efficient solution.
Implementation of Testify
Since the beginning of April 2023, all manual checklists in production, incoming goods and packaging at the Wolfern site have been completely replaced by digital checklists in Testify. Since then, production documentation has been exclusively digital.
Proof of concept:
Weinbergmaier started with a proof of concept to get an idea of how Testify works. The pilot project lasted around 1-2 months.
The proof of concept was carried out on a pilot line, the “Germknödellinie” to be precise. Weinbergmaier drew up a number of checklists and asked employees to test them. After a positive conclusion, the decision was made to use Testify.
Procedure and roll-out:
Testify was implemented at Weinbergmaier in stages over several months. Every two weeks, the upcoming production plan was viewed and checked to see whether the checklists for the planned items were available. If this was not the case, new checklists were created.
Interface project:
Weinbergmaier connected Testify to the company’s ERP system to enable automatic documentation of production. Thanks to this interface, new articles in the ERP system were also automatically created in Testify.
The aim was to ensure that employees no longer have to carry out checklists manually, but that they are created automatically via the interface with the ERP system. In future, checklists will be directly linked to production orders and can be viewed by employees.
Weinbergmaier already has over 120 digital checklists in use and is constantly working on expanding and improving its digital processes.

Efficient incoming goods at Weinbergmaier.
The first step in the process is goods receipt. Immediately after the raw materials are delivered, various parameters are checked with the help of digital checklists in Testify: e.g. the cleanliness and condition of the delivered pallets and the delivery van, as well as the completeness and quality of the delivered goods themselves, to ensure that they meet Weinbergmaier’s high standards.

Production: Instruct and document everything digitally.
Digital checklists play a crucial role in production. They include various types of quality checks. From numerical measurements, such as the core temperature and weight of a product, to visual assessments. This ensures that all standardized specifications are adhered to. Predefined critical control points are also measured and documented.

shift handover and daily inspections digitally supported.
The shift handover is another important aspect of production. To ensure that no items are missing or have been lost, employees take a photo of the shadow board of the cleaning equipment at the end of their shift. These pictures are particularly important for the employees on the next shift. In addition, the cutting knives, for example, are photographed at the end of the shift to ensure their integrity and to avoid foreign objects in the product.
Digital documentation also plays a key role in the daily inspections. Before production starts, quality assurance carries out checks, including hygiene checks, and then releases the line for production.

Tasting in the digital era: results at the touch of a button.
Finally, tasting the products produced the day before is an important part of the quality process. A group of employees, including quality assurance, shift supervisors, production planners, product development and management, carry out these tastings and evaluate the products using the Testify app. This ensures that all products meet Weinbergmaier’s high standards.

Outlook and summary
At Weinbergmaier, documentation in production at the Wolfern site is already 100% digital. Other areas of the company will follow in the course of the year. Weinbergmaier plans to roll out the digital processes further – both in production in Vienna and in new areas of activity such as internal audits.
Thanks to digitized processes, Weinbergmaier has the advantage of being able to access important data and information quickly and easily – a process that used to be manual and time-consuming.

Old processes, which were mainly based on paper, have been replaced by digital ones, making workflows more efficient and clearer. Special checklists in quality assurance are now also mapped via Testify, for example the daily cleaning inspections including defect detection or the root cause analysis in the event of foreign objects being found.
The time savings are considerable: tedious searching for documents for audits is a thing of the past. And last but not least, the company also saves time in production, as there is no need to distribute and collect lists.

Whether shift changes or daily inspections – it is essential for Weinbergmaier that the photo documentation is seamlessly integrated into the process. But photos are also appreciated as part of the work instructions. For example, they can show what the ideal dumpling should look like or what color the Kaiserschmarrn should be after baking.

Checklist templates
The checklist templates are another helpful feature. The ability to create and customize checklist processes directly in the specialist department makes them particularly useful and efficient.

Workflows
The workflow function is also highly appreciated. It can be used to create additional processes that send notifications when certain checks are outside the norm, for example. This tool makes it much easier to monitor workflows.
