Glossary: Predictive maintenance

What does predictive maintenance mean?

The predictive maintenance process, which originates from Industry 4.0, is based on the evaluation of process and machine data. This predictive maintenance makes it possible to obtain status data from machines and proactively maintain systems. Predictive maintenance techniques are used to determine the condition of equipment in operation in order to predict when maintenance should be carried out. This can result in cost savings compared to routine or time-based preventive maintenance, as tasks are only carried out when they are actually necessary. The following three steps should be followed for effective and long-term establishment:

  • Collection, digitization and transmission of data

  • Storage, analysis and evaluation of the collected data

  • Calculation of probabilities of occurrence for certain events
