Glossary: 5S method

5S method

The 5S method belongs to the field of lean management. The aim of the method is the orderly organization of workplaces in order to promote efficient work.

The 5S method ensures orderly work areas and a structured workflow. Waste based on unnecessary movements by employees and poor organization (e.g. searching for/locating documents, test reports and test equipment) should be reduced. In addition, a better workflow can also optimize transport routes and avoid waiting times.

This method ensures an organized workspace in 5 steps:

  1. Selecting (Seiri)
The first step is selecting, where everything that is not part of the workplace is eliminated.
  2. Sort (Seiton)
In the second step, the remaining elements are sorted.
  3. Cleanliness (Seiso)
This is followed by cleaning, checking and keeping the work areas clean.
  4. Standardize (Seiketsu)
Standards are now to be defined for the previously defined points.
  5. Self-discipline (Shitsuke)
The fifth step is to ensure that the previously defined standards are properly adhered to.

With these steps, in accordance with the 5S methodology, waste in the production process can be reduced. The workplace – designed using 5S – focuses on value creation. This increases productivity and occupational safety in the workplace.
