What is a Manufacturing Execution System (MES)?
Manufacturing Execution System(MES) refers to a process-oriented level of a multi-layered production management system. The German term Produktionsleitsystem is often used synonymously. MES solutions are available as a complete package and as individual components. Siemens and SAP, for example, are among the better-known providers. Although MES systems used to function more as stand-alone systems, they are increasingly being integrated into ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software. The aim of an MES is to increase productivity and reduce throughput time, i.e. the total time it takes to complete an order. By integrating an MES into ERP software, plant managers can act proactively when it comes to ensuring that quality products are delivered promptly and cost-effectively and that the production process is controlled efficiently at the manufacturing or automation level.
