Glossary: ISO 50001

What does ISO 50001 mean?

ISO 50001 is a globally valid standard to support systematic energy management. Its aim is to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. The management system standard supports companies in setting up systematic energy management. It can also serve as proof of an energy management system that complies with the standard through certification. The introduction of an energy management system is voluntary. Certification is not required by law.

Systematic energy management is based on the recording of energy flows in the company (energy sources, energy use, energy consumers) and the evaluation of energy efficiency, in particular of systems/facilities and processes/activities that are important for overall energy consumption. This record is the basis for implementing technical measures to improve energy efficiency as well as strategic and organizational management methods.
