What does ISO 50001 mean?

ISO 50001 is a global standard that supports systematic energy management. Its goal is to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. The management system standard supports companies in establishing systematic energy management. It can also be used to prove that an energy management system complies with the standard by means of certification. The introduction of an energy management system is based on voluntary action. There is no legal requirement for certification.

A systematic energy management system is based on the recording of energy flows in the company (energy sources, energy use, energy consumers) and the assessment of energy efficiency, in particular of plant/equipment and processes/activities that are important for overall energy consumption. This recording is the basis for implementing technical measures to improve energy efficiency as well as strategic and organizational management methods.
