What does PLC mean?

While SPS is used as an abbreviation for Programmable Logic Controller in Germany, the abbreviation PLC is commonly used in English-speaking countries.

EN 61131, Part 1 contains the following definition: “A PLC is a digitally operating electronic system for use in industrial environments with a programmable memory for the internal storage of user-oriented control instructions for the implementation of specific functions such as logic control, sequence control, time, counting and arithmetic functions, in order to control various types of machines and processes through digital or analog input and output signals.”
